Davao is known for being safer and cleaner than most major Philippine cities, with a calmer pace and lower day-to-day costs. It’s a strong “settled life” base if you prioritize security, affordability, and nearby nature over nightlife and constant big-city energy.

Часто задаваемые вопросы

Is Davao really the "safest city in the Philippines" or is that overhyped?

Reputation is well-earned—Davao consistently ranks as the Philippines' safest major city. Strict laws, low crime rates, and heavy enforcement shaped by former mayor Duterte’s legacy. Most expats report feeling genuinely safe walking around day or night.

That said, it’s still Mindanao, and some Western governments issue travel advisories for the region. In practice, Davao City itself is very safe—conflict tends to happen in rural parts of Mindanao, not urban Davao. If safety is your #1 priority, Davao is one of the strongest picks in the country.

How does the cost of living compare to Manila and Cebu?

Significantly cheaper. Housing and day-to-day spending are usually lower than Manila and often competitive with (or cheaper than) Cebu, while still offering modern city amenities. It’s one of the best value “big city” bases in the Philippines.

Is Davao boring or is there actually stuff to do?

Depends on your vibe. Davao is calmer and more laid-back than Manila/Cebu. It’s not a party city, but it has solid malls, parks, markets, and quick access to nature. Samal Island is close, and Mt. Apo / waterfalls / beaches are within reach for weekend escapes.

What's the expat community and social scene like?

Smaller than Manila/Cebu, but active. You’ll get more Filipino-integrated living than an expat bubble. Great if you want authenticity; can feel isolating if you need a large international network.

What about internet and infrastructure?

Improved but variable. Fiber is available in many areas and can be fine for remote work with the right setup. Traffic still exists, power interruptions happen occasionally, and public transport can be inconvenient—Grab/taxis help.

What are the major downsides people don't mention?

Mindanao stigma (harder to “sell” to friends/family back home), fewer international flight routes than Manila/Cebu, and a slower pace that can feel stagnant if you crave constant energy. Heat and humidity are intense—AC is basically mandatory.

Who is Davao actually perfect for?

Ideal for: retirees and families prioritizing safety/affordability, remote workers escaping Manila chaos, nature lovers, and introverts who prefer calm.

Not ideal for: nightlife seekers, social butterflies who need big expat communities, or anyone who hates tropical heat and slower pacing.
